Cytokines are a class of small proteins that are released by cells that have a specific effects on the interactions between cells, on communications between cells or on the behavior of cells. Cytokines include the interleukins, lymphokines and cell signal molecules, such as tumor necrosis factor and the interferons, which trigger inflammation and respond to infections.

Growth factors, often regarded as a subset of cytokines, are signaling proteins that stimulate a variety of cellular processes such as cell growth, proliferation, migration, and differentiation.
