Introduction
MCDB 131 is a medium that was originally developed by Knedler and Ham for the cultivation of human microvascular endothelial cells (HMVEC) under reduced serum content. For this purpose it is often supplemented with dialyzed serum, EGF, and hydrocortisone. MCDB 131 Medium is also suitable for other cell types, including human omental microvascular cells, hepatocytes, myocytes, and smooth muscle cells. Additionally, MCDB 131 has been used for definitive endoderm differentiation of human pluripotent stem cells (hPSCs) as well as a basal medium for mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) differentiation.
MCDB 131 Medium is formulated with several components not found in traditional basal media, such as trace elements, putrescine, adenine, thymidine, and higher levels of some amino acids and vitamins. This formulation allows the medium to be supplemented with very low levels of serum or defined components.
